Hi everyone!! I'm sure hardly anyone checks this thing anymore since it's been on a 7 month hiatus. Life has thrown me some curves in the past few months and I've just been adjusting to life on my own. I'm in my 3rd week of a 21 month accelerated Bachelors of Science, Nursing- RN degree program at Cal State Bakersfield. Since it's an accelerated program the workload is pretty intense!! I'm just thankful that I got accepted and that I will have something to keep me occupied for the next two years!! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and hopefully I will have some fun pics to upload soon!!

Where did the time go? We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with both of our families here in Bakersfield at my parent's house. Mom and Dad Hansen outdid themselves with the baking. They brought 7 (yes 7!) pies and homemade caramel chews and we had rolls made from scratch with our Thanksgiving dinner and cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Friday morning and lattes every morning and afternoon! They totally spoiled us!! That was in addition to all the goodies my mom made and Sherry Burns sent a lot of yummy breads and Southern dressing (stuffing) along with her boys since the three of them were here with us as well. We tried to squeeze in some exercise along with all the eating and played some disc golf, football, horseshoes, darts, and football of course! I took absolutely NO pictures the entire weekend so hopefully the photographer in the family took a few that will be put up on their blog. I finished Fall quarter of school the Wednesday before Thanksgiving so I am now on winter break, which basically just means I get to work full time instead of part time which works out good since I'm going to be doing lots of shopping!! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday!!

Pioneer Day Parade 2009

This past weekend the Grant Family celebrated 127 years of Paso Robles, California living. My aunts did an amazing job decorating our float and sewing all of our costumes. They did so much research into the history of the Grant Family and all of my grandpa's relatives that he doesn't get to see that often showed up at the Paso Robles park for a family reunion after the parade. The Independent Scotch Company was the name of the wagon train that the Grants came west with.

So I forgot to charge my camera so pretty much all I got pictures of was the 15 minute time frame when we were on the Ferris Wheel. We actually did much much more...we walked all over the fairgrounds, ate deep pit sandwichs and corndogs, checked out all the displays, arts and crafts in five! buildings, watched the hypnotist show, a motorcycle in a cage show, a lynnrd skynnrd cover band played, walked through the animal barns, saw a dairy cow in labor...and so much more!! I LOVE THE FAIR!! it always brings back great memories! looking forward to the rodeo this weekend!!

So I'm not posting any pictures this post...hopefully ya'll aren't bored out of your minds! We went to San Diego this weekend to visit Cody and play in the annual Coronado Beach Volleyball Tournament hosted by some of the friends. We had an absolute blast and Anya, our cousin Ryan, and friend Jason ended winning the tournament! Woohoo! Loren, Cody, and I also made it to the semi-finals but ended up losing a nail-biter to Bob, Deanna, and Bronzon..boo hoo. Cody just moved into a new house in Pacific Beach with two of his friends and we had the pleasure of staying with them. It's a 3 bdrm, but is definitely pretty cozy! It's only about 1/2 mile from Mission Bay so we took the beach cruiser bicycles down and around the bay to P.B., had some awesome frozen yogurt at Yogurt on the Rocks, took a pontoon(sp?) boat out into the bay to watch the fireworks from Seaworld out on the water (awesomeness!), took the jetskis out..went for a mountain bike ride, had breakfast overlooking the ocean..and just had an all around great weekend with family and friends! can't wait to go back! thats it for now!

This weekend was absolutely awesome!! I dont know if it's just because there's only one more week of school before this quarter ends or the fun we had, but why can't every day be saturday??? I had to work til 3 so Anya and Loren decided to take the horses for a ride down by the river. They packed a lunch and set off across the hills to Hart Park on Sedona and Cinnamon. My Dad, Mom, & Uncle Bruce went for a drive up to Lake Isabella to look at a job Dad is bidding. By the time I got off work it just happened that everyone was meeting at the park for a game of disc golf!! There's this awesome barn at the park that has corrals next to it for the horses so we took their saddles off and let them enjoy grazing on the green grass. Sometime soon we are going to ride over and have a bbq at the barn...its set up for bbq and picnic fun!! My cousin Nathan rode his bike over to the park too so we had a crew of us there to play...all the wildflowers are in bloom and it was a BEAUTIFUL DAY!!! Here's a few pics of what yesterday looked like....oh and a few of the huge double rainbow from 2 weeks ago when it rained here!!

My friends Meg and Nick are expecting a lil baby girl in just a few days so last weekend I got to celebrate with her and ooh and aah over all the cute girlie stuff. My friend Krystal made this blanket for her...it's so cute she even sewed lil flowers on the corner!! Meg is so tiny you wouldnt even know that she is almost 9 months along!!

Sooo...Anya and Dad went out to the ranch yesterday and as they were driving Anya saw this lil white thing standing on the side of the highway. They turned around and went back and found this little lamb still covered in afterbirth and blood standing by her dead mother, no other sheep in sight. Of course Anya couldn't just leave her there so we now have a new pet!! She is so adorable, all white after we gave her a bath this morning.

Anyas birthday was on the 20th and Mom and I both had a holiday from school and work on the 19th so we drove down to Pasadena, met up with my cousin Kirsten and went to the beautiful Huntington Gardens. It was a gorgeous day and we walked around for hours admiring all the different themed gardens. After working up an appetite we had afternoon tea at the Chado Tea House. It was so much fun and the food/tea was delicious!!

This holiday season was a whirlwind of travel for us. We had our family dinner tuesday night and then headed out to Wasco to spend Christmas Eve with my grandparents and uncle and cousin and from there headed over to the beach for Christmas Day with my moms side of the family. We drove back to Bako that night so Loren could work Friday and then I picked him up in Mojave and headed on to Vegas to celebrate with Lorens side of the family. It was an absolute blast all the way and enjoyed every minute we spent with everyone!!

Lucky me...I got to go to the beach twice this week!! The fam decided to do a quick trip over on saturday because mom needs to see the ocean and feel the sand on her feet every once in a while, you can take the girl away from the coast but you can't take the coast away from the girl!! it seems like we weren't the only ones with that idea since we ran into our cousins David and Brenda from Bakersfield and Larry and Darla from Turlock and their kids!! It was such a nice surprise!! so we all had ice cream from the hula hut and played some frisbee and enjoyed a gorgeous day!! Then yesterday I had to make a quick trip over for work so I took a walk on the pier and enjoyed to gorgeous 85 degree weather!!! The seals were really out yesterday too, i saw probably close to 30 seals!!!

This was posted on our cousins blog, her husband is in the military and we think of them often. It just hit home with me after everything we've been hearing in the news lately and with the election going on. I am one of those civilians that hasn't been directly affected by the war "over there" and can't even begin to imagine the strength, courage, and fortitude our soldiers and their families must possess to continue fighting day after day, year after year. I am thankful and I have not forgotten.

If the American military went to war and America went shopping, then seven years later the war wages on but America is home from the shopping spree with her credit cards maxed out and her head aching from buyer’s remorse.The war didn’t change and the fighting force didn’t change, but the people back home are over it. War, it seems, went out of style in 2003.In the military community we roll our eyes when we hear that Americans are war weary. Just what, we wonder, are you all weary of? Hearing about the war? Seeing stories in the news? Most Americans don’t even know anyone in the military and won’t have any direct contact with the war besides seeing uniformed soldiers in the airport. You all haven’t been asked to do anything more to support this war than sit back and watch as your tax dollars are spent.To us, civilian complaints about being war weary sound like the gripes of deadbeat dads: It’s a bummer to hear that things are going badly and you’re sick of being asked to pay for it, but you’re not doing any of the real work yourselves. Many of you believe that fighting this war is optional. You seem to think our nation could make everything okay by just sitting this one out.And, in a way, that reasoning makes sense. Most of you haven’t been on the front lines or on the homefront. You haven’t looked into the eyes of the enemy and the innocents and you haven’t heard gunshots and mortar rounds in the background during a precious-but-short phone call. You haven’t had villagers beg you to stay or to adopt their children. And you haven’t heard your soulmate grapple with dueling guilt: Guilt that he’s leaving his family for so long and guilt that he isn’t deployed more frequently and for longer so that he could do more. You haven’t seen or heard any of this, so how could you possibly understand?It’s not your fault. Nobody has asked you to do anything. Our leaders didn’t think you would be willing to make real sacrifices, so they never bothered to ask. They let you all think that shopping yourselves into debt was patriotic, that spending yourselves into bankruptcy and foreclosure was enough to keep our nation safe.You are war weary because futility breeds weariness. When you feel like something is for no good reason and getting nowhere, it’s understandable that you’d be over it. But maybe you wouldn’t be so war weary if you, personally, had a stake in what was happening “over there.”In the military community, the price tag for this war is much higher but the commitment level is much greater. Our country has not only asked for our tax dollars (and believe me, we’re paying monetarily for this war, too) but for our blood, our family time, our futures, our children’s happiness and our very lives. We have enlisted and reenlisted – and offered our support to our spouses who sign back up - because, soldier and spouse, we know the commitment level of the people who want to kill us and we know the desperate dependence of the people our nation has vowed to protect. We know that we have to be at least as committed as our enemy or our own children will be fighting this same war.My husband has spent the bulk of our five-and-a-half-year marriage deployed. He’s missed most of our son’s life and our daughter has never even heard his voice – not even in utero. We won’t know for years what the long-term effects of these deployments will be on him, on us and on our kids. Last year he suffered a serious head injury and he’s lost most of the hearing in his right ear, the ear closest to his gun. We don’t know what the long-term effects of his injuries will be, either. This year, on his third deployment to Afghanistan, he missed my father’s death and funeral, our daughter’s birth, our son learning to ride a bike and catching his first fish, and countless other precious moments that cannot be reclaimed. There is no predicting what events he’ll miss in the future.And we are the lucky ones.My husband has lost more than 20 friends in this global war on terror and I have an ever-growing group of Army widow friends. They are young and beautiful and many have young children. They are also stunted. They hang around Army towns years after losing their soldiers because they say they don’t fit in anywhere else. They say they can no longer relate to what they see and hear in the civilian world.They can’t reintegrate into the your world because there the people they meet don’t know what it’s like to sacrifice everything for something intangible. The widows say they don’t feel like they fit in where people don’t know how hard it is to break away from that last hug before a deployment. In the civilian world the widows, like all soldiers and military spouses these days, are treated as oddities, something to marvel or gawk at from a distance. People either fawn over us or try to ignore us. Our presence inspires either adulation or discomfort.So we hunker down in our military towns, where regular pilgrimages to D.C. to visit loved ones at Arlington and Walter Reed are common. In military towns, we can laugh about all the dust and sand that comes into our homes after a deployment, carted thousands of miles from where it was picked up. We can complain about long lines at the post office during our weekly visits to send care packages. We can vent about news of another deployment, less than a year after the last one. If anyone in America should be war weary, it’s us.And make no mistake: We are tired. We are stretched thin. Our marriages and our families are collapsing. Our children are emotionally damaged. They act out at school and cry at home. Everyday we wonder if we have the strength for even another day of this. We’re tired from the work, but we’re not weary of the mission.This war is far from over, that’s something both candidates for the presidency have acknowledged. Whichever man finds himself in the Oval Office come January will be in a position to decide our fates in the military community in a way more personal and immediate than most Americans will experience. The next president will determine how much my husband and I will see each other for the next four years and whether or not he will have the tools and policies he needs when he is in harm’s way. The next president will determine our odds of continuing to be the lucky ones.This war is far from over – that is an obvious truth in military communities. But our reality seems so very different from yours. For the last seven years our elected officials haven’t thought enough of you to ask you to pitch in. They haven’t, so I will.My husband and I know that this is not his last deployment and we know that his odds of returning home get worse with each trip. The only way our family and other military families will get a break is if more Americans sign up to join the fight. News reports these days are full of stories of lay-offs and the high cost of health care. Well, guess what? There are no pink slips in the military and our excellent health care system is free.So sign up. We want you. Your nation wants you. And we in the military community need you. My family deserves a break.

We found this gopher snake slithering across the trail on our bike ride this week. Dad and Eddie decided he was the longest gopher snake they've ever seen and wanted to document their discovery. Dad wrapped him up in his shirt and brought him home. Our little neighbor kids thought he was pretty neat and his skin was very soft according to them. I have to admit these 5 year olds were braver than I was. I had no interest in touching him.

To add to the excitement...Loren wasn't home from work yet so Eddie put the snake in a garbage bag in his truck so that Loren could see him when he got home. Well, that wasn't the brightest idea we've ever had...

Eddie ended up driving home with the snake somewhere in his air conditioning vents and then leaving his doors open all night .....I'm so glad I didn't have to ride in that truck!!!

1) The Kern County Fair is here!! yay...we went to the rodeo this evening and saw some awesome cowboying!! Also, everybody knows what you're talking about when you say you had some basque, turkey legs, funnel cake and a corn dog. "oh you were at the fair" everybody, and i do mean everybody in town goes to the fair!!

2) Football Mania...high school, junior college, college, NFL..it doesn't matter..we watch it all...especially Bakersfield College, Fresno State and USC!!! Also, we went to my old high schools Homecoming game Friday night...it was pretty fun..we stomped all over Shafter and I got to see some old teachers and friends that I haven't seen in many years!!

3) It's still almost 100 degrees every day yet everyone comments on how its so much cooler already...ummm people the temperature really hasn't changed..it's all in your head!! Ok..maybe its cooler at night...maybe....

Codys roommate Andrew works at Adventure Water Sports and he was nice enough to let us take out a jet ski!! It was a 3 seater and soooo fast, it went up to 50 mph!! Cody enjoyed making us fly off the back as often as possible, we only were able to dump him off once!!

Sea world is just on the other side of the bay, we went right by it while we were out on the jet ski!! Plus there were so many fish that kept jumping out of the water while we were riding by, made me wonder what else was under there....eek!!

Cody had to work Saturday so Anya and I dropped him off and then headed to La Jolla shores to be beach bums for the day!! This is the only picture I took while we were there...for some reason I was lazy that day...ha ha ha. But the little boy in the seat was soooo relaxed we just had to take a picture but I got my camera out to late to get the front view of him.

Codys apartment is right on campus at San Diego State and parking is at a premium there so we had to walk quite a ways to where we parked our car, not that we minded walking on such a beautiful day!! This is Cody in all his official Point Loma Naval Base Lifeguard official gear...lol...

This weekend I celebrated my first Saturday off since my trip to Seattle by taking a little drive down south to visit my brother. Anya and I took off Friday night after work and drove to San Diego. Poor Loren had to work, so it was just the three of us for the weekend. Cody just moved into a new apartment with his best friend Andrew and they were the perfect hosts. Lol..its a little disconcerting to an older sister when your little brother is giving you a coaster for your drink so you don't damage the coffee table!! its good to know we've trained him well...we'll see how long it lasts!!

I dont know where the time has gone, summer has flown by and here it is fall already. School starts for me on the 15th. It should be interesting. I feel like a professional student by now, i'm on to my 4th university. The school here wants me to go to orientation...by now, after all these years, I really don't need to attend an orientation..I have the whole school thing down, but thanks anyway..ha ha ha. Other than looking forward to school starting we haven't been up to much other than work. Lorens wrist is healing well...I forget he broke it because he's doing so well, no cast or anything these days, just a nice 4 inch scar down his arm. We pretty much vegged out Labor Day weekend by the pool, niiiiccceee!! Oh, and I planted some flowers on Monday because it was a gorgeous 80 degrees outside, I even got a little chilly in the shade. You know its been hot when 80 feels cold people!! Hope everyone is doing well!!

BMX Bike Racing

Soooo...Monday night Loren tried bmx biking with a friend of ours who races BMX bikes on a dirt track here in Bakersfield. The picture isn't of the track where Loren was but it's similar. He went around the track a few times...a few practice laps starting out of the starting gate, hit the first tabletop on the 3rd lap and landed fine but on the 2nd tabletop he came down with his front tire crooked...he fell pretty hard and broke his arm (right wrist). So we spent Monday night at the urgent care and then he had his appointment with an orthopedic surgeon Tuesday and today we are going to the hospital where he will have surgery!! I guess he broke his radius the opposite way from what it normally or usually does...so if left to heal the muscle attached would pull the bone down and away from where it needs to be placed so they are inserting a steel plate in his arm today...fun stuff!! So off we go...wish us luck!!

Loren and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary Thursday the 17th!! I can't believe its been 4 years already!! Time has just flown by!! We had a really nice night out! It was really cute..Mom and Dad Hansen called to wish us Happy Anniversary and after chatting for a bit Loren said he needed to go because we were still on our date!! I love that we are still "dating" after 4 years!! Hopefully we can still be going on dates when we're 80!

My parents and grandparents went sightseeing to the Shoshone Falls outside of Burley ID. There was an elk preserve nearby and all of these elk were on the cliff overlooking the falls...pretty neat.

Fathers Day Ice Cream Social!!

We played a game where everyone had to write down a flavor of ice cream that best described their personality and then I read them aloud and everyone took turns guessing which flavor belonged to which person, Uncle Bruce got the most right and won the Coldstones gift certificate!!

We also played a game where we had 7 different ice creams and we had to guess what flavors they were, not that easy let me tell you!! Grandma won that one!!

Loren's been doing a lot of fishing lately and has been dying to eat some of the trout that he caught..sooo...last month he had me look up a recipe online for grilling trout and he made mom and dad and I dinner. I don't normally eat fish but since he had gone to all the trouble and the smelled really good I had to try some!! They were great!! He even made the salad and rice to go with and set the table!! Ha ha ha!! Points for my hubby!!

Mom is on summer vacation and I had 2 days off work so we jetted over to the coast for a quick beach fix. We laid out on the beach at Avila on tuesday, had mango smoothies from the Tiki Hut and enjoyed a beautiful day on the beach. We stayed last night with my Uncle Kirk in Morro Bay and woke up to a rare fogless day in the bay, we took advantage of the great weather and walked down to the local coffee shop(The Blue Bean) for our morning caffeine jolt. We decided we should tour Cambria, the town where Loren and I got married since I haven't been back since the wedding. Most of the pictures are from our day in Cambria....

Sorry for the lack of posting lately but our camera went missing for a while after Loren's trip to Colorado and now that we have found the camera the amount of pictures I'm behind is a little intimidating....It's been an amazing month, non-stop visitors with the Burns Brothers, Brad, Wes, & Cody here for a few weeks, Jeff, Renee & their lil cuties, my cousin Kirsten and her 2 girlies, Mom & Dad Hansen plus Grandma Brown, Trent & my Grandpa and Grandma Lawrence. All the visitors and convention have made time fly and I can't believe its almost the end of May already. Loren and I are both enjoying our new jobs. Loren is working in Palmdale on a hospital there and he has to get up at 3 in order to drive there, so needless to say he's pretty tired when he gets home, how he finds the energy to still go on bike rides when he gets home is beyond me!! We went over to the Central Coast for Easter to see all my Mom's side of the family. We spent Friday at Avila Beach where it was a gorgeous 76 degrees!! Saturday we spent at my Grandparents doing some odds and ends arounds the house trying to help them get ready for bringing Grandpa home from the hospital after he has his heart surgery next month. Sunday we met cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents at Madonna Inn for an Easter brunch buffet. Anyone who has ever been to Madonna Inn knows how pink it is so it definitely lent itself to the Easter decorations they had put up everywhere. I felt wierd snapping about snapping pictures inside so sorry you don't get to share in all the festivities!! They had a yummy buffet with tons of fresh fruit that we gorged on!! We went back to my Aunt Robyn's after brunch and went for a walk around the neighborhood. Later we met up with more relatives in Morro Bay for an afternoon picnic , birthday cake for my cousin Brendan, and an Easter Egg Hunt for the lil ones. We also played some frisbee, red rover, and softball, believe me red rover was definitely an experience with adults and children ranging in age from about 55 to 2.... We spent Monday at Pismo Beach before coming home. Definitely a lovely holiday!!! Hope you all had fun too!!!

Guess i jinxed the Patriots by jumping on their bandwagon but i'm happy for Eli and the Giants getting the win. Besides that scintillating tidbit Loren and I are really enjoying living in Bakersfield. We've been either going for runs, or to the gym, or on bike rides practically everyday. I think Lorens liking living in the country. I'm taking a medical terminology class at the college here while this semester finishes, then i'll register for the next one. We miss our family and friends in Vegas and send you all hugs and kisses!!

It was a cold and windy night on Saturday, we went to Bite of Las Vegas at Desert Breeze Park......40 somethin booths showcasing food from restaurants around the valley and musical entertainment from many well known bands, would have been fun except for the wind!!! Luckily dunkin donuts was giving away coffee!!! the line was huge but the hot drink made it worth the wait. We specifically went to see Lifehouse....we waited for them for hours....(ok hour and a half) and then....they didn't end up doing the show because the wind was sooooo bad the stage and the lights were unsafe...wimps...lol...sooooo we left....very disappointed!!! maybe next year will be better!!!

The queen of procrastination has ascended her throne this weekend. I didn't get anything done that i wanted to or even was supposed to. I think it must be the vacation looming ahead. It's the same feeling I got in high school at the beginning of my senior year....senioritis i believe its called. No work can actually be accomplished with the end so near. It doesn't matter that it's midterms and I should be studying, or that the water heater went out...I just want to play with my lil cutie "nephews" and watch football or baseball or do anything else but what i'm supposed to do. For instance...at this moment I am in the school library...."studying" my lab manual open on my lap while i am updating my blog with this "ultra important" news....any ideas on how to get motivated???? 11 days til CABO!!!!!

We had an awesome camping trip with Kev and Jess over Labor day weekend. We went to Panguitch, Utah not quite 4 hours from Vegas. Was very pretty and was a nice change in scenery and weather...even though we had quite a bit more rain than we wanted. Luckily my husband was more than prepared with enough blue tarps to build us an ark if it became necessary!!!

Go Dodgers!!!!

Mom, Dad, Anya, Mikey, and I went to the Dodgers game on Saturday night!!! It was a great game against the Rockies!! It went 14 innings!!! EEK a 5 hour game!!! Sadly, the Dodgers lost 7-4 but they played them again on Sunday and won....so I guess I'll survive the disappointment!!!

Smoky Skies

There has been a large fire raging to the southwest of Bakersfield and we have been inundated with smoke and ash from the fire...ugh!! However it made for pretty interesting views. I couldn't quite capture how vividly pink the sun was behind the smoke but it was beautiful!!! This picture was taken at about 3 in the afternoon and it was not stormy at all, all the haziness is from icky smoke!!!

Holly McPeak, very famous lady...not to mention buff!!

We spent two wonderful days in Manhattan Beach, CA watching AVP volleyball!!! Awesome!!! As a belated anniversary trip it was perfect!!!
